Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 0.05% . sodium fluoride solution on fluorine uptake in bovine enamel and to evaluate the usability of proton induced Y-ray. emission analysis(PIGE). 18 bovine tooth enamel specimens were prepared and assigned to 3 groups as follows. (a) specimens without any treatment (b) specimens which were immersed in 0.05% NaF mouthrinsing solution for 5 hours (c) specimens which were immersed in 0.05% NaF mouthrinsing solution for 10 hours
Fluorine concentration was measured at the depth of 263, 625, 2530 run from the surface of the specimens.

The obtained results were as follows:
1. Fluorine concentration was increased according to increasing the time of immersion in 0.05% sodium fluoride mouthrinsing solution.
2. As the measurement depth is deepened from the surface, fluorine concentration was decreased.
3. PIGE analysis was a useful method to analyze minute concentration of fluorine in tooth enamel.
